If Maui has been on your vacation list for the longest time and the only thing that’s holding you back is children, fret not! We’ve got you covered. Here are some tips to make sure you have a stress-free holiday plus some amazing things you can do as a family while you’re there:

Plan Early, Travel Light

We cannot stress enough the importance of booking your flights in advance, especially for travel during school vacations to ensure you have all the dates you need confirmed. Take only the bare essentials with you when you travel but pack for the weather at your chosen location. The last thing you want to do is have your baggage weighing you down. If you have a baby or toddler in tow, consider packing a strap-on because it makes navigating the island on foot which you will do a lot of, that much easier. Maui has shops in abundant supply, hence essential baby supplies in the form of diapers, baby formula milk, and sunscreen are available here. Also, check with your hotel for baby-friendly amenities before you book. Don’t forget to back colouring books and games to keep children engaged when needed.

Research For a Stress-free Experience

If you spend some time to go over all the potential activities and places that are ideal for families you will sail through the vacation with zero-fuss. Maui has a number of activities (which we’ll go over next) that are ideal for children of all ages but identifying child-friendly zones whether it’s the beaches or the condos ahead of time will save you a lot of last-minute stress. If you’d rather not think too much about it, our team at Tropicalbound can arrange condos for you and assist you with booking some fun and enjoyable activities for you and your family. Also, check out the comprehensive list of useful links that we’ve put together for travellers here. We do suggest West Maui for families given its beaches and amazing array of things to do.

Maui’s Most Popular Family Activities

1. Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park is one of the most popular parks in Hawaii. It is most ideal for families to plan a day tour and carry food beverages and basic medicines as these are not available onsite, however, the trip more than makes up for it. The park stretches for over 34,000 acres and has the most incredible tropical vegetation, volcanic landscapes, and endemic species that you could ever experience. While the Park is open 24 hrs, the Visitor Centres have specific timings, all of which are subject to emergency situations.

2. Baby Beach

Lahaina’s Baby Beach, also known locally as Pu’unoa Beach, is an idyllic location suitable for families with very young children given its calm waters, soft sands, and lack of big waves. Great for snorkelling and swimming activities for young children.

3. Maui Ocean Center

Maui Ocean Center is one of the most popular tourist attractions for families. The centre fondly called the Aquarium of Hawaii is an absolute delight for children who love oceanic life. Just some of its amazing attractions include a 750,000-gallon Open Ocean Exhibit with a 240-degree view acrylic tunnel, outdoor tide pools, and over 20 daily presentations. Tickets can be purchased online through their website here.

4. Ocean Camps and Whale Watching

Ocean Camps and Whale Watching trips are organised by the Pacific Whale Foundation for children as part of their general drive towards spreading awareness of marine life and its conservation. Read more about what’s on offer here.

5. Experience a Luau

A luau is one of the best ways for the entire family to experience the local culture. Luaus are traditional Hawaiian feasts with local food experiences and songs, music and dance. There are several different luaus to experience on the island, with the Lele luau being one of the most popular. This luau features a five-course meal with private table service on the beach and is known to sell out quickly. Early booking is recommended.

6. Shave Ice, Anyone?

Shave Ice is a popular cool treat, a firm favorite among locals and tourists alike. Maui has a number of shave ice spots so be sure to taste some flavored ice while you’re there!
